PocketCHIRP Privacy Policy

PocketCHIRP and the PocketCHIRP CHIRP Engine are Android applications developed by Michael Webb / WG5EEK.

Your privacy is important. PocketCHIRP is designed to perform most functions locally on your device and does not sell your personal information.

Applications Covered by This Policy

This Privacy Policy applies to both of the following Android applications:

PocketCHIRP CHIRP Engine

The PocketCHIRP CHIRP Engine is a companion component used by PocketCHIRP 2.0 and later.

It contains the GPL CHIRP runtime and bundled radio drivers used by the main PocketCHIRP application.

The CHIRP Engine does not provide advertising, behavioral tracking, or a separate radio-programming workflow. Its informational screen exists only to explain the purpose of the companion application.

Radio programming data passed between PocketCHIRP and the CHIRP Engine is processed locally on the Android device unless the user separately chooses an online feature in PocketCHIRP.

Information PocketCHIRP Uses

PocketCHIRP may use the following information or device capabilities when required for app functionality.

Bluetooth

PocketCHIRP can connect to supported Bluetooth radios and radio programming adapters.

Bluetooth permissions are used only to discover, connect to, and communicate with compatible programming hardware.

PocketCHIRP does not use Bluetooth information for advertising or tracking.

USB Devices

PocketCHIRP can communicate with supported USB radio programming cables and compatible USB-connected radios connected to your Android device.

USB access is used only for radio programming and related communication with connected hardware.

Location

PocketCHIRP may request access to your device location when you choose features that require location information, such as finding nearby repeaters or radio systems.

Location information may be used to obtain nearby radio data from services selected by the user.

PocketCHIRP does not continuously track your location.

Location information is not used for advertising.

RadioReference

PocketCHIRP can connect to RadioReference when you choose to use RadioReference features.

If you enter your RadioReference username and password, those credentials are used to authenticate directly with RadioReference.

If you choose to save your RadioReference login, PocketCHIRP stores the credentials locally on your device using Android security features, including the Android Keystore.

PocketCHIRP does not transmit your RadioReference credentials to the PocketCHIRP developer.

RadioReference is a third-party service and is governed by its own terms and privacy policy.

Radio Programming Data

Radio memories, settings, CHIRP image files, CSV files, and related programming information are normally processed locally on your device.

PocketCHIRP may create local backup files of radio images when the automatic backup feature is enabled.

These backups remain on your device unless you choose to export, move, share, back up, or otherwise transfer them.

Files

PocketCHIRP may ask you to select files such as:

PocketCHIRP accesses only files that you explicitly select or files created by the app.

Internet Access

PocketCHIRP uses internet access only for features that require online data or services, such as supported repeater directories, RadioReference, licensing or activation, update-related services, or other radio-related data sources selected by the user.

PocketCHIRP does not use internet access for behavioral advertising or user tracking.

Purchases and Licensing

Google Play Distribution

PocketCHIRP and the PocketCHIRP CHIRP Engine are distributed through Google Play. PocketCHIRP may also offer paid functionality through Google Play.

Purchases made through Google Play are processed by Google. PocketCHIRP does not receive or store your full credit card or other payment-card information.

Google may provide PocketCHIRP with information necessary to determine whether a purchase has been completed and whether purchased functionality or access should be enabled.

Direct Distribution and Activation

Copies of PocketCHIRP distributed directly outside Google Play may use a PocketCHIRP activation code and device-bound license system.

When direct activation is used, PocketCHIRP may send the activation code, a device-generated public cryptographic key, and a user-readable device label to the PocketCHIRP licensing server so that a license can be issued for that installation.

The corresponding device private key is generated and retained in the Android Keystore and is not transmitted to the PocketCHIRP server.

Activation codes are used for license activation and are not used for advertising or behavioral tracking.

Direct purchases may be processed by a third-party payment provider such as Stripe. PocketCHIRP does not receive or store your full payment-card number.

Data Collection and Tracking

PocketCHIRP does not sell personal information.

PocketCHIRP does not contain third-party advertising.

PocketCHIRP does not use personal information for behavioral advertising.

PocketCHIRP does not intentionally track users across other apps or websites.

Local Data

App preferences, saved credentials, locally stored licenses, radio backups, custom drivers, and other local app data may remain on your device until you remove them, clear the app's data, uninstall the applicable application, or delete them using available app controls.

Some exported files may remain in locations you selected even after PocketCHIRP is uninstalled.

Third-Party Services

Features that retrieve information from third-party services are subject to the privacy policies and terms of those services.

Examples may include RadioReference, repeater or radio-information providers, Google Play, and payment providers used for direct purchases.

PocketCHIRP is not responsible for the privacy practices of third-party services.

Children's Privacy

PocketCHIRP is a technical radio programming utility and is not specifically directed toward children.

PocketCHIRP does not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes to This Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy may be updated as PocketCHIRP gains new features or as legal and platform requirements change.

The date at the top of this page will be updated when changes are made.
