Verified support is called out separately from experimental or merely loadable drivers. That distinction matters more with custom firmware, where a wrong driver can misrepresent settings even when the radio model name looks familiar.
Android radio programming for custom firmware
PocketCHIRP's custom-firmware support is about programming radios that run compatible alternate firmware: reading their configuration, editing supported memories and settings, saving backups, and writing the configuration back through the correct driver and transport.
The app can load compatible custom CHIRP drivers, giving radio and firmware communities a practical path to Android programming without waiting for every experimental variant to become part of a fixed bundled catalog.

What “custom driver support” means
A compatible custom driver can expose a radio or firmware variant to PocketCHIRP's editor and transfer workflow. It does not mean every downloadable driver is automatically trusted or verified. PocketCHIRP can distinguish exclusive/proven drivers from user-loaded or experimental ones, and compatibility should still be evaluated per radio, firmware and connection method.
Why this matters for the UV-K5 community
The UV-K5 ecosystem moves quickly. Firmware projects can add features, alter menus, expose different memory fields or change how a programming application should identify the radio. A mobile application that can accept compatible custom drivers is better suited to that environment than one that requires every firmware variant to look identical.
