Known Working Radios / Families

A check means proven working. N/A means the radio does not have built-in Bluetooth, so Direct BLE does not apply. A dash means that exact model/path combination has not been individually proven.

Baofeng Writer Baud: 1,200 / 2,400 / 4,800 / 9,600 / 19,200 / 38,400 / 57,600 / 115,200. Tested Kenwood-style 2-pin handhelds have worked. Icom, GD-73A, and UV-3R use different interfaces.
TIDRADIO Kit Baud: varies by hardware revision. Some tested units are 9,600-baud-only, while others support OEM baud switching at 9,600 / 38,400 / 57,600 / 115,200. PocketCHIRP probes the programmer capability instead of assuming one fixed rate.
Baofeng Abbree Writer Baud: 9,600 / 38,400 / 57,600 / 115,200 supported by the programmer protocol. PocketCHIRP has verified the Radioddity UV-82X3 at 9,600 baud and the TIDRADIO TD-H9 at 38,400 baud. The dongle is detected by its FFE1 + FF31 capabilities, not by MAC address or advertised name.

Different radios use different programming interfaces. PocketCHIRP is designed to support multiple connection methods rather than locking you into one type of hardware.

Bluetooth

Use supported Bluetooth programming adapters to read and program compatible radios wirelessly. Supported external programmers include Baofeng Writer, TIDRADIO Kit, and the Baofeng Abbree Writer. Programmer hardware and supported baud rates can vary by revision and radio; PocketCHIRP probes supported programmer capabilities where available.

PocketCHIRP is available now for Android. Install both PocketCHIRP and PocketCHIRP CHIRP Engine — the two apps work together to provide the interface and radio-driver backend needed for programming supported radios.

Both apps are required. Radio compatibility and available features vary by model and connection method. Always verify programmed settings before transmitting.

No Google Play on your device?

PocketCHIRP is also available through the direct distribution option for Android devices that do not have access to the Google Play Store. Use the button below to get the direct version and follow the supplied installation instructions.

Direct installation may require allowing APK installation from your browser or file manager in Android settings.

How to use PocketCHIRP.

You need both PocketCHIRP apps and a supported way to connect your Android device to the radio. From there, the basic workflow is read, edit, and write.

Install both Android apps

Install PocketCHIRP and PocketCHIRP CHIRP Engine. PocketCHIRP is the main app, while the CHIRP Engine provides the radio-driver backend. Both must be installed. Google Play is the easiest route; devices without the Play Store can use the direct distribution option.

Choose how you will connect

  • USB programming cable: for the typical USB-A radio programming cable, use a USB-C to USB-A OTG adapter with your Android device.
  • AIOC (All-In-One Cable): an alternative to the normal USB-A programming-cable-and-adapter setup. AIOC product page. In Australia, see Ham Radio DX.
  • Direct BLE: connect directly to supported radios that have compatible built-in Bluetooth LE programming.
  • Bluetooth programmer: supported external programmers include the Baofeng Writer, TIDRADIO Kit, and Baofeng Abbree Writer.

Select the radio and read it first

Open PocketCHIRP, choose the correct vendor and model, select the connection method, and read the radio. Reading first gives you a working image to edit and preserves the radio's current configuration before you make changes.

Edit, review, and write

Make your channel or supported radio-setting changes, review them, then write the updated configuration back to the radio. Keep the radio connected and powered during the entire transfer.

Quick hardware note: Most standard radio programming cables end in USB-A, so an Android phone or tablet with USB-C normally needs a USB-C-to-USB-A OTG adapter. The AIOC is the notable alternative described above.
